A Scintillating “Seascape”
By Susan Steinberg, The Independent, September 8, 2016
“This Pulitzer Prize winner opened the 2016-2017 season of Role Players Ensemble, earning tumultuous applause from the audience and this enthusiastic reviewer. . . .
“[T]here is much to ponder in this exceptionally enjoyable performance, made memorable by a finely-meshed quartet of actors . . . . directed by veteran George Maguire, returning for his 5th hit production.”
Review: Angst, humor and lizards heighten ‘Seascape’ at Role Players Ensemble
By Sam Hurwitt
Two couples meet on a lonely beach. As strangers, they’re wary of each other but also fascinated, and the often difficult conversation they have brings out into the open their deepest insecurities. Oh, and one of the couples happens to be giant lizards from deep beneath the ocean.
For all its weirdness and humor and semi-fantastical premise, it’s a bittersweet piece, tinged with nameless unease and fraught with existential dread. And it’s a wonderfully offbeat and challenging play for a suburban community theater to be doing, which in itself is a fine reason to welcome the lizard people with open arms — even if you have to explain to them what arms are.
Review: Adorable sea creatures in ‘Seascape’
By Sally Hogarty
I never thought I’d go crazy for two large, green creatures that come out of the sea, but that’s what happened when I saw Role Players Ensemble’s production of “Seascape” last weekend.
Well-paced by director George Maguire, “Seascape” features set designer Giulio Perrone’s wonderfully realistic sand dunes with appropriate sea grasses well-lit by Christian Mejia. These, along with sound designer Adam Wayne Gistarb’s ocean and bird noises, transport the audience to an East Coast shoreline. . . . Adding to the impressive scenic designs are the incredible sea creature costumes created by Barbara Bandy-Rosado.
Review: Albee’s Provocative “Seascape” Presented by Role Players
By Charles Jarrett
The Role Players Theatre in Danville has just raised the curtain on an incredibly interesting, thought provoking and exciting production of Edward Albee’s play “Seascape.”
The acting is quite sterling, provocative and revealing. Of course, having director George Maguire at the helm and this pluperfect cast to deliver Albee’s bittersweet words of innocence lost and wisdom examined has to be worth its weight in gold.
